From Backstreet Boys to One Direction, Boyz II Men to BTS, "boy band" music has been some of the most commercially successful in history — and yet, it has largely gone unstudied by musicians and music lovers alike. Despite its supposedly saccharine melodies and uncomplicated lyrics (we’ll question that), this music has touched billions of listeners around the world, leaving them with strong emotional experiences of hope, nostalgia, passion, and more, time and time again.

In this subscriber-only short course, composer and lyricist Mahea Lee breaks down how all these various elements (lyrics, melody, chords, production, and arrangement) come together to produce a style of music that is almost as nebulous as it is familiar. We'll critically explore who is considered the first modern boy band, how to define the differences between boy band music and pop, and which way the Backstreet Boys actually even want "it"...

But we'll also take it one step further, seeking lessons from deep within the song banks of *NSYNC, One Direction, and Backstreet Boys to draw out inspiration to help us improve our own songwriting and production skills.

This course is meant to be fun, quick, and inspiring, with plenty of surprising discoveries and practical exercises along the way. So quit playing games and let's get started!
