Become a quicker, more versatile mixing engineer by exploring how pro mixers approach real songs in different genres.
Mixing is more art than science. Knowing how to mix a variety of genres gives you the versatility to tackle all sorts of musical challenges. In our first mix course we covered the fundamentals of mixing and how pros approach them. In this advanced course we'll look in more depth at how pros mix real songs in multiple genres, including rock, Hip-Hop, pop, and cinematic/orchestral styles, and pull out lessons you can apply to any music.
This is a six-week mix bootcamp. Each week, you'll encounter a new genre, with new challenges, and deliver a mix with the advice and support of a real live Soundfly Mentor. You'll learn how to properly structure mixes, practice your existing skills, and learn advanced, genre-specific tools and techniques for making better mixes.
If you're looking for more mixing basics, check out the first course in this series: Faders Up I: Modern Mix Techniques.
This course was created by the Soundfly team based on interviews with professional sound engineers and mixers, including Grammy-winner Brian Losch, Kenta Yonesaka, Leon Kelly, and Tim Leitner. Between them, they’ve worked with artists including Kendrick Lamar, Billy Joel, Wynton Marsalis, Carly Simon, Run The Jewels, Yo-Yo Ma, Action Bronson — the list goes on and on.
The course is hosted and guided by Soundfly’s Creative Producer, Nyle Emerson, who’s an engineer, emcee, and video artist based in New York City.
Learn advanced mixing techniques from professionals as they pull back the curtain on how they approach real songs in four different genres.
Our expert mentors do whatever it takes to ensure that you achieve your musical goals for the course and leap forward in your learning.
Each week, you'll work with a new genre to test existing mix skills, and learn new advanced tactics from a collection of pros working in each genre. Think of this as a bootcamp for you to build on your knowledge from Faders Up: Modern Mix Techniques I.
YES. If you sign up and the course isn't what you expected, we will give you a full refund as long as you tell us before the start of the second week. The reason that the second week of the course is a cut-off for our guarantee is simply because if we go past that deadline, our Soundfly Mentors will have likely already put in a lot of time, energy, and effort.
We're also happy to move you to a subsequent session, if you end up not having as much time as you expected. Once again, let us know as soon as possible!
We interviewed a number of professional sound engineers about their approaches to certain mixing topics for this course. It includes Kenta Yonesaka (Unlocking the Truth, Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper), Tim Leitner (Carly Simon, Adam Ezra, Billy Joel) , Brian Losch (Maria Schnieder, Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Thile), and Leon Kelly (Run the Jewels, Kaytranada, Action Bronson).
There aren't any pre-requisites, but if you're new to mixing, we suggest starting with our course Faders Up: Modern Mix Techniques I. You'll need a basic familiarity with a digital audio workstation (DAW) like Logic, Live, or Pro Tools. We'll be demoing in Logic Pro X throughout this course, but with references to other DAWs from time to time and help from your Soundfly Mentor, if you need it.
The Mainstage experience is built on our science-backed active learning model, which helps you learn more efficiently and effectively than typical online courses. The key difference is our mentorship approach — one-on-one coaching with a trained Soundfly Mentor who has extensive experience in the subject. When you sign up, we'll pair you with an expert who will tailor the course to your experience level, offer detailed weekly feedback on your work, answer any questions you have, help you blow past obstacles, and keep you on track to accomplish your musical goals.
You'll also get unlimited, lifetime access to all the course content — including in-depth lessons, activities with answer keys, quizzes, video tutorials, and downloadable resources — so you can review anytime and keep your skills sharp.
As an extra perk, you’ll get lifetime access to our tight-knit musician community group on Slack, where you’ll find peer-to-peer feedback and support, lots of inspiration, and fun, musical conversations with fellow Soundfly students, mentors, and staff.
On the start date, the session begins, which means you'll begin the guided experience that includes weekly activities, feedback from Soundfly Mentors, and much more. This is intended to help you stay accountable and get the feedback you need to succeed.
We believe strongly that accountability, feedback, and support are critical to active learning — where you learn by putting your knowledge into practice and engaging thoughtfully with what you're learning. And we think that active learning is a more effective path to learning a new skill than passive learning — where you're simply watching videos and reading text.
However, if you don't need the mentorship component of our course, whether it's because you're working with a private instructor, or don't have the time, or maybe you are a private instructor and want to use the course content with a student, you can buy unlimited access to the course content for $99. Please email [email protected] for a code to purchase the course content at the discounted rate.
