A companion course to our podcast, with additional lessons, creative activities, and more info for the musically inclined.
Soundfly's podcast, Themes and Variation, stems from the kind of intense conversations and arbitrary debates most music fans are all-too-familiar with — things like, what's the most epic guitar solo of all time, why is "Giant Steps" such a benchmark at music schools, and how does Thom Yorke know exactly how I feel?
In each episode, a panel of musicians and music lovers will bring their unique experiences and opinions to the table to dissect and discuss a group of songs centered around a common theme. But we don't want the conversation to stop there, which is why we've created this companion to the podcast.
Here, we'll dive a little deeper into some of the topics mentioned on the podcast, providing additional insights and resources to help you make practical use of the knowledge and inspiration you acquire as a listener. Additionally, we've designed some creative and engaging activities to accompany each episode. You'll also find more information about our panelists, useful practice tips, and more.
This course is a lightweight and fun way to take your podcast experience beyond that first listen, but if you're looking for a deeper learning experience, be sure to check out Soundfly's custom mentor sessions.
Soundfly Mentors are expert musicians trained and supported in order to be able to help you meet your musical goals. They come from a variety of backgrounds, genres, styles, and even locations, but all are ready and excited to work with you to get closer to your big picture goals. You can view bios of our current mentors at Soundfly.com/mentors.
This course is for curious learners who love music! It was built as a companion to the first few episodes of Soundfly's podcast, Themes and Variation, which you can listen to on Apple, Spotify, Stitcher, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Because the podcast itself is built around the notion that people will notice different musical elements in a song based on their unique experiences, perspectives, and areas of expertise, this course isn't really a dive into any one particular topic. However, it aims to explain and elaborate on a few major topics that are mentioned on the podcast. At the end of each section, we've also provided various creative activities to help you continue exploring between episodes!
If you're interested in a more personalized and in-depth learning experience, we highly recommend considering custom mentorship. If you'd like to know more, please reach out to us at [email protected] or fill out our interest survey.

Companion courses aren't really meant to be standalone, self-sufficient learning experiences. They're more like quick surveys of a few topics. We definitely recommend going through every lesson, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with jumping around in this course! If you find that you're particularly interested in a specific subject that's just barely mentioned here, we encourage you to consider diving deeper via one of our custom mentored sessions.
